The Iroquois by Lauren
What tribe is very powerful, traded with the Europeans and hunted deer if they were on a diet? Well, it is the Iroquois! You will get to know some information about them, their beliefs, warfare, and the food they ate. The Iroquois are the most powerful tribe in America, who fought in wars; who grew, caught, and hunted food; and who traded goods with the Europeans.
The Iroquois live in many states such as Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, New York, Ontario, and Quebec. They traded food for weapons with the Europeans. There are six tribes: Cayuga, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Seneca, and in the 1700’s, Tuscarora joined them. The group called them the Haudensaunee. They have two major tribes that were their enemies, which were the Huron Tribe and the Algonquian Tribe.
Next, the Iroquois were very religious. Religion was a major theme in the Iroquois Tribe. Their religion was a strong source. They had gods of everything, such as love, sea, and wind. When a god died, it walked in their village for ten days. To remember gods and spirits, they told stories on their deeds. The Iroquois told tall tales on how the Earth was made. They also thought that when someone was sick in the winter, they believed the illiness was because of evil powers.
Also, the Iroquois were known for war. The Iroquois were very skilled when it came to the war; they were strong and very powerful. During any war most of the Iroquois tribe sided with Britain which who was very skilled, which made them strong. After America won the war, the Iroquois lost a lot of land and had to move to smaller reservations, mostly because American soldiers ruined their homes and crops. After the 1920s, the Iroquois got some of their land back.
The Iroquois had many food groups. The Iroquois caught many types of fish such as eel, salmon, trout, bass, pike, and sturgeon. They called corn, bean, and squash the three sisters. Women grew the three sisters and tobacco. The men trapped food such as rabbits, squirrel and porcupines. They called bear, beaver. deer, eel, hawk, heron, snipe, turtle, and wolf the nine clans and they still were hunted these animals. Also, if for some reason they were on a diet, they ate deer.

That is the way the Iroquois lived, their way of life by getting food, what they believed in, what they ate and their warfare. The Iroquois are a tribe that still exists in United States and Canada. Also, they were the most powerful tribe in America that fought in wars, believed in many things, and who traded goods with the Europeans.
