Pueblo by Matthew

Have you ever heard of a tribe that was famous for hunting and warfare? Well, that tribe is Pueblo. Could you imagine that they raced three hundred miles in war? They almost hunted everyday. The Pueblo were known for their hunting, food, warfare, who they were, traditions, beliefs, weather, and shelter.

First, the Pueblo were good hunters.  They hunted almost all day long for many different animals. One of those animals is deer which they either traded or kept for food. They also hunted elk and did the same thing with it as deer. They traveled hundreds of miles to hunt buffalo and did the same thing with it as deer and elk. They also hunted some other animals like rabbit and squirrel. When they were hunting, the women were weaving or making food.

When they were not hunting , they were planting foodm, like corn and squash. They also planted beans and seeds. They planted all their foods except the animals they hunted. Another thing they ate were onions, which they also planted. The women made all the food.  Some helped plant foods and hunt.

The Pueblo raced three hundred miles in warfare. During those three hundred miles, they stopped at over seventy villages. Men carried important instructions from Pope, the village religious leader to other villagers. On August 10, 1680, Pueblos attacked Spanish solders, villagers, and priest. More than 375 people died. the Pueblo people burned down Spanish churches. If the Pueblo leader did not practice the Pueblo’s religion, he was beaten or killed. In return, some Pueblo people agreed to keep peace with one another.

The Pueblo lived in the southwestern United States for thousands of years. Between 1200 and 1300, ancient Pueblos moved from the great cities. No one knows why. Spanish gave the name Pueblo, which means “town” in Spanish. Pueblo people still have many things in common with there ancestors. The Spanish explorers heard  tales of desert cities made out of shimmering gold in the 1500s. Over three thousand years ago, the first built multistoried cliff.  Four-hundred years later the Pueblo built more dwelling cliffs. When people came, they divided into many different group, which then were called Pueblo, Hopi, Zuni, and Ute.

The Pueblo tribe was full of traditions. They also had many festivals. There was an underground building for religious ceremonies. The reason it was underground was they believed that the first people came up to earth from underground. They practiced both native religion and Roman-Catholic. They had many dances like the buffalo dance, deer dance, and rain dance. They also had a corn dance, too. They had many feast days like St. Lawrence and St. Clare.

The Pueblo had shelter in the mountains like Mesa Verda. The kind of shelter they had was made out of clay, river water and sand. They had built on dry rocky canyon walls. There were many limestone bricks in every room. Their weather was very dry. In winter, it was very cold, but in summer it was really hot. Their only water was from mountain snow.

As you can see, Pueblo is very interesting. Pretty much every day they hunt and kill, but they also do many other things.
