The Shoshone by Colton
The Shoshone were a tribe that lived in the mountain states of the U.S. They were known for their way of life, their clothing, their spiritual life, friendships and conflicts, and where they lived. The Shoshone were not a very friendly tribe.
They live in many states. They make their own houses. They stayed in their own villages. They lived in cold places. They called them Newe or Nimi (which means people).Their homeland was parts of present-day Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, California, Nevada. They lived west of Snake River. Their territory reached the Uinta Mountains near the Green River. The land reached present-day southern eastern California. There were valleys and mountains. They also had lakes, steams, ponds, marshes, rivers, and deserts. There are many types of fish birds animals as well as many types of trees, shrubs, berries, and wild flowers. They lived in three different places. The Paiute were neighbors.
The Shoshone were also known for their fishing. They fished for trout, salmon and other fish. They dried and smoked their own meat. They preserved it in caves. They danced in circles when they catch their first fish. They hunted in basins. They drank mild beer. They made their tea out of many plants. They roasted most of their meat, grease, berries, to make a food called pemkoa. Through fishing, they found their own food. Men caught small animals with snares and traps. They used tools like knives and bows. They sliced their legs to make it easier to kill. Women also found food for their family, like vegetables, fish, camas roots, for the winter.
Shoshone proved unfriendly attacks to European Americans. They normally attacked wagon train and mail carriers. They would attack intruders. The U.S. Army fought this tribe.
The Shoshone were known for their spiritual beliefs. They wwanted respect for spirits and believed that humans and animals were linked. A group reached what is now their home A.D.400.They grew crops and made small villages and homes. Hunters entered caves; rituals were performed for problems caused by magic. The Great Basin provided means of survival and basis of their religious life. They contacted great spirits. Shoshone helped obtain spiritual game. They observed rituals.
Lastly, the Shoshone were known for their clothing. The men had beads on their clothes and so did the women. They made their own linins with natural resources. They decorated clothes. They had frayed ends on all of their clothes. They had beads on their robes. Their clothes were made out of animal hides. They decorated their cloths with quill feathers and beads. The men had shirts with frayed sleeves. They also wore protective clothing. Sometimes they wore shawls. They used floral designs. Women wore dresses with fringed ends, beads, and quill feathers.
In conclusion, the Shoshone were a very interesting tribe. They were known for their way of life, their clothing, their spiritual life, friendships and conflicts, and where they lived. The Shoshone were not a very friendly tribe, as they fought with many others.
